Magic in Paris Olympics: Begins with an Unmissable Opening Ceremony

The Paris Olympics 2024 commenced on July 24th, where Paris had the privilege of being the main metropolis, where the opening ceremony happened two days later. The event had millions of fans tuning in on TV and social media across the globe

Let’s begin with the obvious. India hasn’t exactly had a glowing track record when it comes to performance in the Olympics, which is quite surprising considering the plethora of talent that the country possesses in sports and other competitive fields.

Indian sports players have not tasted much success on an international level. They were nothing more than objects of ridicule or condescension or, at best, fluke underdogs (cricket players being an exception). Fortunately, there has been an amazing turnaround since the past few years.

Indian Achievements in the Paris Olympics

India commenced its campaign on July 25th with archery, with 112 Indian athletes competing across 20 sports and 69 medal events.

Looking at recent achievements, Neeraj Chopra made India proud by winning a gold medal in javelin throw at the last Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, where India fielded 21 shooters, the country’s largest ever contingent yet.

Manu Bhaker is the latest entry in the list of athletes that made India proud and creating history. She has become the first Indian woman to win a bronze medal at the Olympics in shooting after qualifying for the final of the 10 meter air pistol for women.

She became the second Indian woman to qualify for the Olympics finals in shooting since Athens 2004.

Bhaker and fellow teammate, Sarabjot Singh, also became the first Indian pair to win an Olympic medal in shooting at the 2024 Summer Olympics. Finally, India beat Australia in hockey at Tokyo 2020 with the men’s team making the the silver medalist Australians bite dust at 3-2 for which skipper Harmanpreet Singh claimed credit

It was the first time in 52 years when India snatched victory from the jaws of Australia in the Olympics since 1972 in Munich, following which they tasted defeat for five consecutive years until the Paris Olympics.

Conclusion

The dramatic turnaround of Indian athletes in the Paris Olympics has turned the tides for India at a global level as a whole. One can say that India will perform with renewed vigor in the hopes of achieving bigger and better results in the near future after a rather long and uninspiring history of India at the 124-year-old multi-sporting event.
