A productive morning is what everyone wishes for, but hardly anyone works anything to achieve it. We human beings are lazy-bums by nature that delight in being waited hand and foot rather than take the initiative and do work on our own.
World Health Organization (WHO) has conducted a survey highlighting the major health issues faced by people who were night owls that slept well past midnight and, as a result, woke up very late in the morning, negatively impacting their personal and professional lives.
Getting up in the morning is a slog for many as nobody wants to have their beauty sleep disturbed before sunrise? It requires a tremendous amount of discipline and commitment to turn over a new leaf which, thankfully, the present generation is much better at than their previous counterparts.
The perfect recipe for success is constructing a proper morning routine as it bolsters your physical and emotional well-being, which in turn generates productivity in completing your tasks for the day. It all depends on how your morning starts or, rather, how you start it.
We all visualize ourselves brimming with energy & mood because it all depends on how you start your day as it has profound impact on your performance throughout the day. Its important to mention that what works for one person may not necessarily work for another.
If you’re looking for a productive morning routine, it should be one that caters to your lifestyle, individual goals and needs. Here are the practical steps where you can design a proper morning routine that simultaneously bolsters productivity and personal well-being.
Keep in mind that the following steps require dedication on a consistent basis to achieve fruitful results because the author can vouch for the fact that through personal experience. Let’s look at the points that can bring in the much-needed change.
The foundation of a productive morning starts the night before. A good night’s sleep is the base for recharging your body, which contributes to your emotional well-being, which in turn positively effects physical health and mental clarity.
Therefore, 8–9 hours of sound sleep is a must. This can be quite tricky for people who have fallen victim to binge watching their mobile phones all night. So if you’re looking to sort out this problem, learn and practice these steps.
Create a proper & consistent bedtime: revitalize your internal clock by going to bed early at 10 or 10:30 at night so you can wake up early.
Limit your screen time before bed: Make it a practice to do away with your mobile phone, computer, laptop, and tablet at least 2 hours before bedtime, as the blue light emanating from them can deplete the production of melatonin, a hormone that promotes sound sleep.
Relax your mind via evening routine: Take a few hours out for reading your favorite books & novels, as literature is a powerful medium that can influence your thoughts and improve your knowledge on different topics. Also, practice meditation and listen to soothing music before bed.
While you may have the early-to-bed-early-to-rise policy ingrained in your psyche, it isn’t necessary to wake up every morning at 5 sharp, unless it goes with your body and lifestyle. Wake up at a time where you can begin your day with a calm mind without feeling rushed.
Self-care is important so give yourself sometime in the morning and set your goals for the entire day that you need to accomplish and make it go smoothly by completing tasks one by one while taking regular breaks in between work.
Dehydration is something that the body is accustomed to after a good but exhausting day’s work and it becomes even more pronounced after a good night’s sleep. So, drink a glass of water first thing after waking up along with a piece of garlic to flush out toxins, boost metabolism, and rehydrate your body.
You can also add a squeeze of lemon for an extra boost of Vitamin C. Staying hydrated in the morning can bolster your energy levels and mental alertness.
There’s nothing like a good stretch or a brisk morning walk to begin your day with to improve your mood, focus, and energy. Daily exercise releases endorphins from the body, which mitigate stress & anxiety and elicit a positive outlook.
Practice yoga and meditation every morning to increase blood flow to your muscles, release rigidity, and make your body more flexible. Gym-savvy folks aside, try to focus on cardio exercises if you’ve got a rotund frame and shed the extra kilos.
A balanced and nutritious breakfast is a necessary prerequisite to fuel your mind and body, so never skip it for anything except if you want low energy levels and poor focus for your day’s tasks. Your breakfast should include a mix of proteins, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates to keep you feeling full and focused for the entire day.
Kellogg’s Granola, Oatmeal with almonds and walnuts, Oat Noodles, Roti & Daal with cucumber, Idly & Dosa with sambar, two pieces of toast with scrambled eggs, and orange juice are some healthy breakfast options that you can choose from.
Its an irresistible temptation for many people to grab their phone first thing upon waking up and scroll through social media handles, which is a recipe for stress and distractions while you’re onto important tasks, both at home and at work.
Make it a point to focus on yourself and your well-being for the first hour of the day. Avoid unnecessary distractions like your phone, TV, or tablet. Use this time to invest in self-care, goal-setting, and reflection.
However hard you try to maintain consistency, there are times when your practice gets disrupted due to circumstances beyond your control, like an urgent work deadline, illness, or any personal reason, so make it a point to create a flexible routine without feeling guilty.
Get rid of your monotonous routine and take your morning habits as a toolkit. Quite simply, pick and choose your new habits that suit you on any given day of the week depending on your time, mood, and work schedule.
A productive morning is something everyone aspires for, but sadly, very few people are willing to change their lifestyle to achieve it. It all depends on your commitment and how much you want to bring a positive change in your life.
The aforementioned points are something that the author has tried & tested in the past few months that have worked wonders for him. One productive morning is not a one time phenomenon if you’re quite serious in bringing your life back on track and just requires discipline and commitment.
